Our Gentle Approach
The Baby Aquatics program for swimming with babies emphasises a tailored approach to individuals within a relaxed and fun class setting.
We appreciate that babies all develop at different stages and that by being observant and receptive to their needs we can help them develop to their full potential.
We value a holistic approach to baby’s development where we focus firstly on nurturing the bond you have with your baby through shared enjoyment and increased well-being.
This is then a perfect foundation for building water confidence in a loving, care-free and relaxed environment.
At Baby Aquatics we teach you how to swim with your baby so that they can enjoy from an early age the freedom that being in the water affords.
Babies have a natural affinity with water and are born with reflexes that lend themselves perfectly to being water babies! We teach you how to stimulate these reflexes to aid your baby’s development in the water and out.
The unique ideas and techniques that we offer in our classes provide the perfect base in building a long-lasting love of water which will eventually lead to the natural and organic emergence of independent swimming.
As well as our main objectives of nurturing baby-parent bonding and building water confidence for you both, we also place key importance on being safe.
Learning key safety skills is an integral part of what we teach so that alongside each child’s enjoyment in the water they also adopt a healthy respect for it.
Living by the sea as we do, we can not underestimate the importance of being safe in the water!
Benefits of taking babies swimming:
-
Spending time in the water with your baby affords a special opportunity for deepening your bond and building on the foundations of your relationship.
-
Babies who develop their swimming abilities are often more alert for their age, with better eating and sleeping patterns.
-
As they develop their swimming abilities babies also increase their independence and self-confidence, and are given plenty of opportunity to delight in their own achievements!
-
Swimming improves the cardio-respiratory function of babies, the same as for adults.
-
Baby’s stamina, strength and general health will be improved, making their heart and lungs stronger.
-
As babies are able to move independently in the water long before they are able to walk or crawl, swimming also contributes to sound motor development and improves the function of skeletal muscles.
-
Early coordination is facilitated through the transformation of early reflexes into conscious movement and babies learn their sense of balance through movement in the water.
-
Swimming gives babies a chance to develop their personalities alongside their social and expressive skills. Cautious babies learn to accept risk while boisterous babies learn to become more prudent.
A study was carried out into the benefits of baby swimming by Professor Hermundur Sigmundsson from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). He followed 19 babies who had taken swimming lessons for 2 hours a week from age 2-3 months until 7 months. According to Sigmundsson “It’s incredibly exciting that specific training for young babies has an effect later in life”. Click here to read the results of the study.
